Synopsis of The Farmer's Wife
Hitchcock's first attempt at a pure comedy, adapted from the stage play of the same name, tells the story of a farmer who chooses a wife, and after going round and round he discovers that the one he loves is right in front of him. The biggest difficulty in adapting this film was to change a script with many lines into a silent film that relied solely on pictures to express joy. Hitchcock quietly started to work hard from the middle of the film, processing the afternoon tea party sequence into a classic slapstick comedy, which made The audience burst into laughter. Because cinematographer Cox fell ill in the middle of filming, Hitchcock even made a guest appearance with the camera.
