Lonesome

Synopsis of Lonesome

Paul Fejos' 1928 silent film masterpiece. Demonstrating a virtuosity that enhances rather than undermines a simple and touching film story, it creatively presents ordinary working-class characters without arrogance, shyness or hypocrisy. Director Fejos is interested in the struggle of simple, unsophisticated people against their social environment, which manifests itself in either indifference or hostility, and this interest continues to be the highlight of his subsequent films. The film mainly tells the story of the protagonists Mary and Jim who have been painfully trapped in the extreme loneliness of city life for a long time, and finally escaped from the bondage through love. The film expresses the confusion and pressure of urban life through highly inspiring film art, and at the same time tells the story of people living in cities under an industrialized environment.
