The film is adapted from the true experience of the famous Norwegian explorer Sol Heyerdahl, telling the legendary adventure story of his and five friends rafting across the Pacific Ocean in 1947. Norway's most-invested film to date ($18.5 million), based on real events, tells the story of six explorers crossing the Pacific on a simple raft. "Water" actor Pal Svervajn Hagen plays the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl. In 1947, Saul Heyerdahl and five friends set out from Peru, South America, and took a raft for 101 days and 4,900 miles to reach the Polynesian Islands in the South Pacific, creating a miracle in the history of human navigation. He wanted to prove that 1,400 years ago, the ancient Peruvians took this simple raft across the Pacific to settle in Polynesia. Heyerdahl wrote this arduous resume into a book, which was translated into more than 60 languages around the world. The documentary he made also won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 1952.
