Synopsis of The Opium War

The continuous import of opium from Britain made Emperor Daoguang feel that the country was in danger. Although he was afraid of the foreign powers, he still issued an edict and appointed Lin Zexu (Bao Guoan), the governor of Huguang, as the imperial envoy to Guangzhou to ban smoking. However, the collusion between corrupt officials and British businessmen made the opium trade complicated. Lin Zexu's anti-smoking campaign faced many difficulties from the beginning. The British businessmen pretended to obey Lin Zexu's orders while planning a bigger conspiracy. On June 3, the 19th year of Daoguang's reign, Lin Zexu directed the burning of cigarettes at Humen Beach, and the people applauded. The British businessmen who returned home made a big fuss about this matter. The well-equipped British troops marched from the Pearl River Estuary to Tanggu and declared war on China. The weak and incompetent Daoguang did not send troops to fight. Instead, he blamed everything on Lin Zexu and dismissed him. He also sent Qishan (Lin Liankun), the governor-general of Zhili, as the imperial envoy to make peace with the British, which led to a historical tragedy.
