Synopsis of Laurence Anyways
"The sky is our limit." Fred (Suzanne Clément) tells those who are curious about what she thinks of her boyfriend Lawrence (Melvil Poupaud) having a transgender gender. That was 1989, and she believed her generation was ready to accept transgender people. It's just that both Fred and Lawrence took nearly ten years to discover that they were the ones who were really at a loss. The film uses flashback to tell the story of a century-long relationship between a woman and her transgender boyfriend. For Lawrence, transsexuality was a prerequisite for survival, and it was the first breath of oxygen that finally allowed him to breathe underwater after 30 years of holding his breath. However, Lawrence only decided his gender. He never thought about his life after transgender, nor did he think about spending ten years to verify his relationship with the most important friend/lover in his life, Fred. "Lawrence" is the third feature film of young Canadian director Xavier Dolan. It is also Dolan's most ambitious and epic work since he started making movies.
