Synopsis of Out in the Open
The story takes place in 1946. After the Civil War, somewhere in the heart of Spain there was only despair, poverty and exile. There was a boy who kept running away and found a hiding place in a ditch. After the search party left, he faced a plain full of danger and drought. Fortunately, he met a shepherd on the way across the plains, and the two finally chose to go together. Along the way, they must deal with hunger and lack of water, and evade men sent by their foreman to find the boy. The shepherd becomes the boy's mentor: he explains his vocation and his understanding of life. As time passed, the shepherd also learned what kind of fear the boy wanted to escape.
