Synopsis of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

The classic supernatural literary film written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz was nominated for the 1948 Academy Award for Best Cinematography! Gene Tierney plays a stubborn widow who insists on living independently with her daughter after the death of her husband, and has to move into a haunted house. It turns out that there is really a ghost of a captain living in this house. The captain died of accidental suffocation and was rumored to have committed suicide. Unwilling to do so, he continued to occupy the old residence, hoping to "pretend to be a ghost" and scare people away. Unexpectedly, not only was the widow not frightened away, she also became a best-selling novelist with the help of the captain's ghost. Unfortunately, she fell into the trap of a philandering writer early and broke up with the captain. It was not until she died of old age that the two reunited. This love story between a human and a ghost is both funny and romantic. The male and female protagonists have distinct personalities, creating a very attractive dramatic tension. The captain played by Rex Harrison and the daughter played by Natalie Wood, who was a child actor at the time, both performed wonderfully, and the photography and soundtrack were also of a high standard.
