Synopsis of The Killing Fields

In 1972, after the U.S. military was defeated in Vietnam and withdrew from Cambodia, the New York Times's war correspondent in Cambodia, Xinni (played by Sam Waterston), remained there to continue reporting. Cambodian Pandi (played by Wu Hanrun Haing S. Ngor) is Xinni's local translator and assistant. With Pandey's help, Xinni escaped from danger many times. The two formed a deep friendship amidst the war. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge occupied Phnom Penh. Sinni was able to escape unscathed, but Pandy was arrested because he did not have a passport, and began a life of hell that was worse than death. During the labor reform of the Cambodian Communist Party, Pandi witnessed the brutal and bloody Khmer Rouge regime and received inhuman treatment. In 1978, when the Viet Cong invaded Cambodia, Pandy took the opportunity to flee to the Thai border and reunited with his old friend Xinni who had been looking for him. The film won three awards at the 57th Academy Awards in 1985: Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing.
