Synopsis of Shanghai
In 1941, U.S. Naval Intelligence Agent Soames (played by John Cusack) was ordered to come to Shanghai to investigate the truth about the assassination of his friend Connor. As a reporter for the German Herald in Shanghai, he visited the cocktail parties of celebrities. He used his romantic relationship with Mrs. Muller, the Nazi engineer, to eliminate suspicion and obtain intelligence. In a gambling game, he met Anna (played by Gong Li), the wife of the gang leader Lan Ting. The mysterious code words between her and her men made him curious. The follow-up failed, so he had to continue to inquire. In order to investigate Connor's death, he secretly met with Connor's informant. However, the meeting between the two went bankrupt because the Japanese army tracked down the underground party. By chance, Soames reunited with Anna again, and through her introduction met Shanghai underworld leader Anthony Lanting (played by Chow Yun-fat) and Japanese Intelligence Agency Colonel Tanaka (played by Ken Watanabe). During the investigation, Soames gradually discovered that Connor's death was related to a mysterious Japanese woman (played by Rinko Kikuchi)...
