Synopsis of Red Cuff of the Sleeve

The play is adapted from the novel of the same name and tells the story of a tragic palace romance between a palace maid who yearns for the life she wants, and a king who puts the country above love. When Li Zuo (played by Li Junhao), who strives to become a holy king, meets Cheng Deren (played by Li Shirong), a palace maid who wants to pursue her own happiness, what changes will the two bring to each other's lives? The title of the play "Red Sleeves Trimmed" comes from the costumes of court ladies. The sleeves of court ladies in North Korea are all trimmed in red. The historical prototypes of the male and female protagonists in the play are Yi Zang, the 22nd king of the Joseon Dynasty, and the Yi concubine who grew up from a palace maid to the highest-ranking first-class concubine.
