Synopsis of Close-Up

In Tehran, journalist Farazmand went to report on the arrest of young man Hosse Sabzian for fraud. It turned out that Sabzian, an unemployed painter, was a movie fan. He claimed to be the famous director Mohsin Makhmalbaf, and gained the trust of the wealthy Ahankach family to borrow money from them to make movies. Sabzien was arrested after the incident. Director Abbas Kiarostami launched a documentary-like follow-up investigation on the case. He interviewed the police, Ahankakh's family, and Sabzian himself. During the interrogation, Sabzian regretted defrauding the feelings of the Ahankach family, but he said that he did so because of his love for art. If he had money, he would really make his own movie. And, impersonating director Makhmalbaf gave him confidence. In the end, the plaintiff Ahankach's family dropped the lawsuit, and Sabzian also met the real Makhmalbaf, who took the young man to revisit Ahankach on a scooter.
