Synopsis of Cry Freedom

Denzel Washington plays Steven Biko, a witty, gentle, kind and brave leader of the black civil rights liberation movement in South Africa. He was killed by security police in prison in 1977. Kevin Kline plays his white journalist friend Donald Woods. He risked his life and took his family to escape from his native South Africa so that he could tell the world about Biko, the freedom fighter. Denzel Washington was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor that year for this film.
