Synopsis of Nanook of the North

This film is the first documentary film by Robert Flaherty, the American documentary director who is known as the "Father of Documentary". It records the Inuit leader Nagak near Inukjuak in the Arctic Circle of Quebec, Canada. The daily life of the Nuck family from August 1920 to August 1921, including trading with white people, catching fish, hunting walrus and seals, cooking over fires, and building igloos, created the starting point for anthropological social imaging records . Flaherty's staging and reenactment of scenes in this film have caused widespread controversy. For example, he concealed the fact that Nanook usually hunted with a shotgun, deliberately showing the traditional harpoon hunting method of the Inuit; and for example, in order to film ice Inside the house, the scene shows the Nanook family getting up early in the morning, with half of the igloo lighting removed. This film is the first full-length documentary in history. It was selected into the "National Film Record Book" by the Library of Congress in 1989.
