Synopsis of Obsession
Adapted from the American J. Caine's novel "The Postman Always Rings Twice", it was completed in 1941. Under the filming conditions that the script must be reviewed by the fascist government, Visconti filmed this abnormal love story of adultery and murder of her husband. It becomes a work full of despair and fate. In the film, on the one hand, the heroine comes from a poor family and involuntarily marries a fat and vulgar hotel owner. She has no courage to escape the life of being supported (and humiliated from time to time). The male protagonist is a wandering unemployed vagrant. Unable to withstand the temptation of the heroine, he commits a fatal crime and the difficult social living conditions clearly highlight the fateful fate of the male and female protagonists who have no choice but to hit it off. Visconti, who is directing for the first time, has already shown the greatest characteristics of his later works in the film: the delicate depiction of the characters' inextricable erotic psychology. In the gaze of the two sexes on each other's bodies during the meal, Visconti's The stark juxtaposition of material hardship and unbridled inner carnality makes up for the brevity of the adulterous process.
