Mengji 夢二

Mengji 夢二

Synopsis of Mengji

1991 Cannes Film Festival Directors' Fortnight. As the finale of the "Taisho Trilogy", this film is full of sensual eroticism and absurd colors. It tells a ghost story that revolves around the character of the famous Japanese painter and poet Takehisa Yumeji (1884-1934) and his work. The character was imagined by the director as a playboy obsessed with daydreaming, played by former rock star Kenji Sawada. He is trapped by the pursuit of women and the fear of death. He fell in love with many women, but none of them captured his heart. At the same time, he continued to fight against his peers, but was unable to defeat them. In order to pay tribute to Suzuki Kiyoshi, the famous Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai used Umebayashi Shigeru's film score in "In the Mood for Love", which was originally from the film "Dream II".
