Synopsis of Mother India

In this melodrama, a poor woman raises her son amid many hardships. But no matter how hard you struggle, you must stick to your moral principles. The film begins with the completion of a canal in a village set in the present day. Radha (Nargis), the mother of the village who is asked to open the canal, reflects on India's new independence by reminiscing about her newlywed past. Radha and Sham's (Raaj Kumar) wedding was paid for by Radha's mother-in-law, who got a loan from moneylender Sukhilala. This incident began a spiral of poverty and misery that Radha endured. The terms of the loan were disputed, but the village elders decided in favor of the moneylender, after which Sham and Radha were forced to pay three-quarters of their crops as interest of 500 rupees on the loan. While trying to use more land to alleviate poverty, Shamu's arm was crushed by a boulder. He was ashamed of his helplessness and of the rest of the village. Feeling that he was of no use to his family, he left and never came back. Soon after, Radha's mother-in-law died. Radha continues...
