Retreat, Hell!

Retreat, Hell!

Synopsis of Retreat, Hell!

[Plot Summary] In November 1950, the U.S. military crossed the 38th Parallel to pursue the 1st and 7th Infantry Divisions of the U.S. Marine Corps that defeated the North Korean army. When they attacked the Chongjin Reservoir area on the China-North Korea border, they were attacked by the Chinese People's Volunteers. A fierce counterattack by superior forces fell into a tight siege by the Chinese and North Korean troops. The U.S. military headquarters ordered a full withdrawal. General Smith of the US Marine Corps blatantly disobeyed the headquarters' orders and ordered his subordinates to counterattack the Chinese and North Korean troops. Captain Steve of the Marine Corps led a battalion to serve as a cover. After a bloody battle, he finally broke out of the opponent's encirclement with the main force. Film critics believe that this film is one of the few films that positively depicts both sides of the Korean War. On the one hand, it reproduces the overwhelming scale of the Chinese People's Volunteers' counterattack in the early days of entering Korea in a positive way, and at the same time, it praises the tenacious fighting spirit of the US Marine Corps. In the film, a U.S. Army corporal, who had just turned 17, stood firm despite suffering three gunshot wounds during a night battle, ensuring the safety of the main peak. Another unique feature of the film is the extensive use of documentary footage shot on the battlefield. When the cannonball explodes in the shot, the camera shakes violently, making the audience feel as if they are actually there.
