Synopsis of Stavisky...
A luxurious biopic about a conspiracy coup, based on a true story in France in the 1930s. The romantic protagonist is a French Russian Jew. He was arrested and imprisoned for fraud. After he came out, he changed his name and went around cheating, engaging in illegal speculation activities, and finally controlled the press, publishing circles, racecourses, and other venues in Paris. political circles as well as luxurious social venues. He is also an out-and-out gambler. Eventually the scandal came to light, bringing down with it many of the government officials implicated. He had to commit suicide during the pursuit. This incident also exposed the inside story and scandals of French politics, intensified internal factional struggles, and caused the French government to experience a serious political crisis and almost collapse. Through the story of a liar who rose to prominence through deception and trickery in the upper class, the film examines the tendencies of human nature and the mental state of people during that era of economic downturn and hesitation. Also inserted in the middle is the Soviet exile Trotsky who came to France to seek asylum, which is in sharp contrast to Stavisky. The director's purpose is to metaphorize the two extreme directions of French political orientation. Sondheim's music fits the picture perfectly.
