Synopsis of The White Countess

The story takes place in Shanghai in the 1930s. Todd (Ralph Fiennes) is a diplomat whose life and career are at a bottleneck, hanging out in entertainment venues and pubs all day long. When he first came here, Todd had grand and lofty ideals, but his gradual loss of vision and complex power struggles made it impossible for him to move forward on his career path. In a nightclub, Todd met a woman named Sophia (Natasha Richardson). Sofia was once a famous countess, but now she has become a showgirl.
