Synopsis of The Act of Killing

In 1965, the Indonesian government was overthrown by the military junta. Those who opposed the military dictatorship were identified as "communists" and suffered a bloody massacre. Within a year, more than 1 million "communists" died, including Farmers and some local Chinese. The protagonist of the film, Anwar Congo, and his friends participated in the massacre that year. He is now a veteran of Indonesia's largest paramilitary organization, Pemuda Pancasila. Anwar and his friends accepted the director's invitation to re-enact in front of the camera how they executed those "communists". By making movies, they recreated the scenes of that year and picked up those blood-stained weapons again. Wire used to strangle people. Anwar told his story, which included his love for American gangster movies when he was young.
