Synopsis of Providence
The protagonist of the film is a 78-year-old famous British writer. He is seriously ill but still drinks alcohol and speaks indiscriminately. From time to time, he was entangled in nightmares at night, which made him think about the plot of his last work while recalling his past events. As a result, nightmares, his imagination and memories of past events were mixed together to form the story framework of his works. The film integrates the process of literary creation with fantasy, anger, etc., creating an exquisite Freudian puzzle. This was Resnais' first film shot in English. The script is rather wordy and has a strong literary flavor. The film is considered to be Resnais's masterpiece, and Bogarde's performance is particularly superb, but ordinary audiences may find it monotonous.
