Synopsis of Maiden

Maiden thrilled audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year with its extraordinary story of strength and perseverance. Through extensive archival footage and deeply personal interviews, this stunning documentary forms a suspenseful, poignant, and uplifting journey that illustrates the enduring tenacity of the human spirit. In the late 1980s, British amateur sailor Tracey Edwards decided she had had enough of being fired and relegated to being the only woman on her sailing team. Tracy sets her sights on the upcoming Whitbeck Round the World Race, an astonishing 40,000 nautical mile circumnavigation that almost no ship dares to stop. Tracey assembled and competed in the world's first international all-female sailing team. As they weathered not only the life-threatening high seas, but also the storm of sexism in the media, this inspiring group of women had to rely on their own and each other's sheer resilience to prove the naysayers and doubters wrong. What they didn't fully anticipate, however, was how their expedition would mean more than just a race to the finish line.
