Synopsis of Like a House on Fire

In a small town in the Czech Republic, the annual firefighters’ dance is coming again. This year's ball has a special content. The old chief (Jan Vostrcil) who is suffering from cancer is about to celebrate his 86th birthday. This group of old comrades in the fire brigade decided to hold a large party for the chief and awarded him a golden ax in recognition. Contributions he made throughout his life. The content of the dance was substantial, including lottery draws, awards, dinners, dances, and even a beauty pageant arranged in a unique way. But things backfired, and these links never went as planned. The gifts given out are constantly being stolen, and young girls are reluctant to show up to participate in beauty pageants. Amidst the chaos, a fire also joined in the fun... This film is the last work of director Milos Forman before leaving the Czech Republic.
