Synopsis of Comradeship

On March 10, 1906, a fire caused a horrific gas explosion. The thick smoke continued for three weeks, and more than 1,200 miners were buried deep in the Couliers (located in France) mine. A special rescue team of German miners rushed to France from Westphalia (a region in the northwest of the Federal Republic of Germany) to join the rescue. Director George William Babst's "Comradeship" is based on this incident. The film is undoubtedly the pinnacle of German socialist films of its era. Babst paints a picture of the mining districts on the Franco-German border, as the aftermath of World War I receded, and France's prosperity and jingoism contrasted with Germany's inflation and high unemployment. Both the visual style and the spirit of solidarity shown in the film are derived from the Soviet social realism of the time, but Babst held a more complex social criticism attitude than any other Russian director. Only a traumatized and skeptical Berlin pessimist could have made such a moving and heartfelt work.
