Synopsis of Bus 174

In 2000, a hostage-taking incident in the Botanical Park in Rio de Janeiro attracted a certain amount of attention in Brazil after it was broadcast live on television. Sandro, a black young man born in a slum, attempted to rob a bus and hijacked several passengers when the police arrived. , after several hours of confrontation from afternoon to night, the police finally pounced on Sandro and the hostages in a chaotic situation... Two years later, directors Jos Padilha and Felipe Lacerda used video materials from the time, interviews with relevant people, and records of the current situation in Brazilian slums to form this documentary that re-examines the "Bus 174 Incident." The director replayed the unfortunate life of the orphan Sandro for more than 20 years, and at the same time raised questions about the police employment system, media ethics and other related aspects. The film won the Best Documentary Award at the Sao Paulo Film Festival, the Best Documentary Award at the Havana Film Festival, and the Special Award at the Munich and Rotterdam Film Festivals.
