Synopsis of Sons and Lovers
The plot describes a young miner, Paul, who has a quiet and sensitive personality. His mother, Gertrude, turned to her son for love and sustenance because of a bad relationship with her husband, who was often an alcoholic. Her emotions went beyond normal maternal love. This situation affected Paul's relationship with his girlfriend Miriam. Due to the influence of her family's strict religious concepts, Miriam only wanted to pursue spiritual love and rejected physical passion. In order to get rid of the control of his mother and the emotional blow of his girlfriend, Paul unexpectedly fell into the arms of Clara, a female worker who had separated from her husband. However, he soon discovered that there was a lack of spiritual communication between the two. Finally, Paul abandoned this boring coal mining town and went to a foreign land to start a new world. According to D. A British literary film adapted from H. Lawrence's original autobiographical novel, directed by Jack Cardiff, an outstanding photographer, who won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. The film portrays Paul's complex psychological state quite delicately, and the three members of the family, Dean Stockwell, Trevor Howard and Wendy Shearer, also perform brilliantly.
