Synopsis of Scarlet Street

The honest and diligent Klaus (played by Edward G. Robinson) is a cashier. On weekdays, his biggest hobby is painting. However, Klaus has never thought of making money by selling his works. One day, Klaus met a woman named Katie (Joan Bennett). Driven by vanity, he lied to Katie that he was a painter. Katie has a boyfriend Johnny (Dan Duryea) who has been dating for many years. For Johnny, Katie is just a tool for him to seek benefits, while Klaus has become Katie's cash cow. Johnny, who has always had doubts about Klaus's identity, took Klaus's paintings to sell. Unexpectedly, they were unanimously recognized by art critics. Katie even claimed that she was the author of these paintings. Klaus proposed to Katie, but was ridiculed mercilessly by the latter. In anger, Klaus had thoughts of murder.
