Synopsis of The Wheel
This is an early work by the epic film giant Gance. The original version is nine hours long. The film tells a story similar to today's TV soap operas: a railway engineer rescues a girl from a car accident and adopts her as a daughter. Unexpectedly, both himself and his son developed a liking for girls. In order to prevent his son from possessing her, he married the girl to a rich man. But there is an irrepressible love between the son and the adopted daughter. The son had a dispute with her husband and died. The old man blamed his adopted daughter for his son's death and did not want to see her again. Later, he became blind, and his adopted daughter secretly came back to take care of him until his death. The revolutionary nature of the film is reflected in the following aspects: the opening train accident montage uses fast editing, which is extremely shocking; a large number of literary allusions are added to the mediocre plot, enriching the connotation; both photography and editing have a certain sense of form, such as the texture of the lens. The rhythm matches the music, and the machine in the picture is used as a symbol of modernity, etc., starting a "pure film". The title of the film refers to the reincarnation of fate and desire, which is suggested by the image of a wheel.
