Synopsis of Tyson
In this complex documentary, Tyson seems to have multiple personalities: optimistic but rough, childlike but cruel, innocent but brooding, emotionally devoid of emotions, and every angle of life is extreme. He takes responsibility for everything that happens to him, including some things he swears he's innocent of, except for the rape charge that landed him in prison for three years. In interviews with varying camera angles (sometimes 1960s-like split-screen footage) and set pieces, Tyson talks about being mugged and humiliated as a child in Brooklyn alleys by older kids, and that he was too frightened to fight back. Admit that you “never want to be like that again.” Soon after, he was enraged when a thug killed one of his pet pigeons for no apparent reason, and he frantically knocked down the child. The film hides some old background: Tyson started out and gained huge fame at the age of twelve under the wing of legendary trainer Cus D'Amato; the film adds some wonderful early 1980s footage to detail D 'Amato, a modern-day Michelangelo, used the raw material of Tyson's physique to create a boxing masterpiece.
