# Synopsis of The Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family

The story tells that the Toda family was originally a big family and had always been high-spirited. However, when the head of the family died of illness, the entire family underwent great changes. His wife worked day and night to prepare for his death. After settling the inheritance, the family fell into decline. His son had to go to Tianjin, China to work. The mother and her youngest daughter were forced to move to the homes of their children. As a result, the mother and her daughter-in-law became increasingly estranged. and, the cohesion of the family gradually disintegrated with the sudden death of their father. The mother and daughter were finally forced to hide in a broken house on the beach, feeling infinite sadness and loneliness. This film is a variation of "We Must Love Mother". The story also starts with the death of the father, but it unfolds a different kind of emotion and care. This film is one of Ozu's most mature works, and it handles the delicate relationship between three generations living under the same roof with great sensitivity. The wealthy family opens with high spirits, but compared to the desolate situation at the end of the film, the feeling of disillusionment is particularly real and strong. It fully demonstrates Ozu's strong and mature personal style. Selected as the best movie of the year by Japan's "Movie Newspaper".
