Synopsis of Edward II
The film is based on the famous British dramatist Christopher. Marlowe's play of the same name. In the 16th century, the king of England neglected his queen and openly engaged in various shocking love behaviors with his same-sex lover, which caused the rule of the entire kingdom to collapse and face disintegration. The foresighted queen finally resorted to ruthless measures to prevent this disaster from coming. Using "highly conceptual" to describe this film still doesn't quite convey its complexity. Jarman rewrites 16th-century Christopher Marlowe's play through the lens of modern gender politics. The story, which revolves around King Edward's open homosexuality, does not take place in a luxurious historical environment. The film's scenes use bare walls, dirty floors, and the actors wear fashionable costumes. Jarman also exploited all the gay subtext in Marlowe's original work and made it a focal point. He used dialogue from the original work but mixed the dramatic story with contemporary repression of homosexuality and the struggles of gay people. The film does not have an exact era, and situations from various eras are intertwined most of the time.
