Synopsis of The Mayor of Casterbridge
Henchal was originally a grass cutter who betrayed his wife and daughter due to drunkenness. He regretted it so much that he stopped drinking and worked hard to get rich. Twenty years later, he became the mayor of Casterbridge. Later, his wife and daughter returned to him, but disasters also followed one after another. Because of his stubbornness and paranoia, he fell out with his original partners and went bankrupt in the competition. The scandal of betraying his wife and daughter was also publicized and he was ruined. He was abandoned by everyone and died miserably in a small house. Through this tragic description, the author reveals the disasters that capitalist development has brought to the working people and condemns the irrationality of the capitalist system.
