Synopsis of The Mourning Forest

Young Machiko (played by Ono Machiko) cannot get over the grief of her child's death. She divorces her husband (played by Yoichiro Saito) and is in so much pain that life is worse than death. Machiko came to the northern countryside of Nara and became a service worker at the local center for mentally retarded people. Here, she met an old man named Shigeki Uda. Maoshu lost his beloved wife 30 years ago. For decades, he has been immersed in the memory of the past and cannot extricate himself. One day, Shigeki decided to go to a distant forest to visit his wife's grave, and Machiko went with him as his guardian. Two people with unfortunate pasts embark on a journey to find the meaning of life... The film won the Jury Prize at the 60th Cannes Film Festival.
