Synopsis of Beauty
"Skoonheid" is Afrikaans, and its literal translation is "Beauty". And beauty is exactly what the hero Francois (Deon Lotz) lacks in his life. On the surface, he is a middle-aged man with a wife and daughter, and is a competent husband and father. However, the repressed same-sex desire in his heart has been biting him like a trapped beast. After Francois met a friend he hadn't seen for many years at his eldest daughter's wedding, his eyes were completely occupied by his friend's son Christian (Charlie Keegan). Christian is young, handsome, full of energy and strength, and is in the prime of his life. François slowly begins to become obsessed with and stalking Christian, paying attention to every move he makes. This delusion finally allowed his lust to take over his reason and burst out in a violent and terrifying way... "Beautiful" is the first South African film to be shortlisted for the Cannes Film Festival ("Un Certain Regard" section). It is also the winner of the 2011 Cannes Queer Palm Award. It also represents South Africa in the competition for the 84th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
