Synopsis of A Scanner Darkly

In the near future, the drug epidemic has been out of control. An extremely addictive illegal drug "D-pill" is popular in the United States. Government authorities have to use high-tech surveillance systems to combat the out-of-control situation. Undercover drug agent Fred (played by Keanu Reeves), aliased as Barb Art, tries to track the source of drugs. In this way, he and the small drug dealer Donna Hawthorne (played by Winona Ryder), drug addicts Jim Bayeris (played by Robert Downey Jr.), Ernie Rockman (played by Woody Harrelson), Charles Feike (played by Rory Cochran) and others live together. But in fact, Fred was also deeply attracted to the "D-pill" drug addiction. As his drug addiction deepens, he gradually blurs the line between reality and fiction. Fred, who has lost his mind, continues to pursue the hiding place of the drug lord, unaware that he has been manipulated by the mastermind behind the scenes.
