Synopsis of A Farewell to Arms

In early 1917, during World War I, Lieutenant Frederick Henry, who returned from vacation in southern Italy, returned to the location of the frontline field ambulance team. Major Rinaldi, the surgeon, told Frederick that a new hospital had been built nearby, but more importantly, there was a beautiful British nurse, Catherine Barclay, there. When they first met, Catherine curiously asked Frederick: Why did he, an American, join the Italian army? Not long after they fell in love, Frederick was injured in both legs in an Austrian shelling, and it would take at least six months to recover. It was Catherine who took care of him, and the lovers spent the best time of their lives. Catherine is pregnant, and Frederick is surprised and delighted to marry her, but the hospital director, who discovers the hidden secret, kicks him out of the hospital. Disgusted with the war, Frederick became a deserter, and he and Catherine fled Italy. In 1918, Catherine died in childbirth, and Frederick thought he would never fall in love with another woman again.
