Synopsis of Sonny Boy

In 1920, Waldemar Nordes (played by Sergio Hasselbaink), a young man from Suriname (a former Dutch colony) came to the Netherlands to study. He suffered various discriminations because of his skin color. In The Hague, Ledemar stayed at Lika's house, but she was the only one who didn't mind Valdemar's skin color. Lika raised four children alone. After discovering that her devout Christian husband had an affair with the maid Janes, she couldn't bear the betrayal and chose to divorce. Valdemar and Lika, who was 17 years older than him, fell in love for a long time, and soon Lika became pregnant. Despite all their hardships, the couple helped many refugees survive in Nazi-occupied Netherlands during World War II. The war eventually separated Valdemar and Rika, and the only witness to their love was their child, Sonny. Since the film was released in the Netherlands on January 27, 2011, it has attracted more than 400,000 viewers. In February 2011, "Sonny Baby" represented the Netherlands in the Oscar competition for Best Foreign Language Film.
