Synopsis of Quills

Sade (Geoffrey Rush) is a French writer in the 19th century. He is extremely talented and advocates freedom of speech. There are many erotic descriptions in his novels. These works angered the French authorities, who imprisoned him in a lunatic asylum. However, the shackles of authoritarianism only made Sade more determined to write and write, and his works were born one after another in the lunatic asylum. The director of the asylum is an enlightened young priest. He also read Sade's novels and was full of appreciation for Sade's talent and spirit. He provided Sade with generous living conditions, allowing him to concentrate on writing, and at the same time asked the washerwoman Medlyn (Kate Winslet) to help Sade and take his works out for publication. There is also a secret affection between Medellin and Sade. However, the powerful state machinery still sent Sade to the gallows. The government could not tolerate his "immorality", but his works were passed down and opened people's minds.
