Synopsis of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Senator Ransom "Rance" Stoddard (played by James Stewart) takes his wife Hallie (played by Vera Miles) back to a small town to attend the funeral of an old friend Tom, and the friendship between the three of them is still there. It goes back many years... The young lawyer Ransom was robbed by a gang of villains on his way to the town. The leader of the gangsters was Liberty Valance (played by Lee Marvin). The injured Ransom was taken in by a restaurant owner in the town, and met Hallie, the daughter of the restaurant owner. He also met Tom (played by John Wayne) who loved Hallie. The people in the town were also harmed by Liberty's group. Ransom began to use his knowledge to enlighten the local people, hoping to use legal means to punish Liberty.
