Synopsis of Foolish Wives
The famous German immigrant director Eric. Feng. Stroheim spent 1.3 million US dollars and 11 months to shoot this super literary film. The original copy was five hours long, but it was condensed into three and a half hours when it was released to the public. Due to the staggering cost, Hollywood tycoons originally criticized Eric, but later gave up due to the unexpected blockbuster success of the film. The story is set in Monte Carlo in 1919. Eric plays a White Russian prince who cheats on an American diplomat's daughter and makes a living by exploiting his mistress, an ugly maid. Driven by a sexual sadism, he raped an unfortunate idiot woman. In the end, he was killed and his body was symbolically thrown into a stinking ditch. Eric has a special liking for naturalism and hopes to express all love stories in his paintings. He specially built the scenery of Monte Carlo's casino and majestic palace on the coast of California, and had a very bold approach to lighting.
