Indian Foolish Old Man Manjhi: The Mountain Man

Synopsis of Indian Foolish Old Man

This is a film adapted from a true story. The film tells the story of Dashrath Manjhi, an Indian farmer who insisted on digging mountains after losing his beloved wife. In 1959, Manji's wife Pagunya had an accident while climbing a mountain and unfortunately fell into a valley. Due to the remote location, Pagunya was not sent to the hospital in time and eventually died of excessive blood loss. From the mountainous area where Manji lives to the nearest town, the villagers have to cross 55 kilometers of mountain roads. In order to avoid a recurrence of the tragedy, Manji decided to dig a shortcut through the valley and used a hammer and a chisel to start the massive project of "The Foolish Old Man Moves the Mountains". After 22 years of day and night work, Manji finally opened the passage between the valley and the town in 1982. Although the passage is only a short 110 meters long, it shortens the distance between the two places to 15 kilometers. In 2007, Manji passed away from cancer at the age of 73. In order to commemorate his great contribution, the Bihar government held a state funeral for him. Thirty years after Manjhi was completed, the local government finally paved the road and it became the main thoroughfare for local residents.
