Synopsis of The Grand Illusion

The film is set during World War I and tells the story of three French prisoners who escaped from a German concentration camp. Three French pilots were shot down by the Germans during a mission. Podio, Mike and Rosenthal were taken to a prisoner of war concentration camp. Bodio and the German prison warden Roffenstein were both from noble backgrounds and shared the same political views. The two became friends in prison. The three then discovered that the inmates were planning an escape, and they dug an escape tunnel. Mike and Rosenthal also joined in the excavation. In the end, they collectively escaped from prison and were pursued by the German army. During the escape, Podio was knocked down by Roffenstein. Two French prisoners, Mike and Rosenthal, escaped to the home of a German peasant woman. With her help, the two went through various twists and turns. Fleeed to Switzerland. This film is one of the earliest prison escape films and has been rated as one of the greatest "prison escape films". It is also an anti-war masterpiece by director Jean Renoir.
