Synopsis of Spartacus

In 73 BC, Spartacus (played by Kirk Douglas), a slave from the ancient Roman province of Libya, fell in love with the slave girl Varinia (played by Jean Simmons) at the Capua Fighting School. In the same year, the slaves in the fighting school launched an uprising under the leadership of Spartacus and gained their freedom. Later, Spartacus reunited with Varinia and got married. The uprising shocked the Roman ruling group and intensified the contradiction between the aristocratic faction and the plebeian faction in the Senate. The aristocratic general Crassus (played by Laurence Olivier) took the opportunity to defeat the populist leader Gracchus (played by Charles Laughton), usurped the power of the chief consul, and implemented dictatorship. In order to attack Crassus, Gracchus planned to release the slave army privately; however, Crassus paid heavily to bribe the pirates and recalled two armies fighting abroad. Spartacus's rebel army was surrounded by enemies on three sides and was outnumbered. Tens of thousands of slaves died in the battle. Spartacus, his wife and 6,000 surviving comrades were all captured by Crassus. At the last moment, thanks to the help of Gracchus, the situation changed again.
