Synopsis of Paths of Glory

In 1916, in France during World War I, the war between the German and French armies was in full swing. At this critical moment, French Army General Brolade (Adolphe Menjou) gave the troops led by Army Captain Dax (Kirk Douglas) an order: capture the German-occupied Ant Mountain at all costs. The military orders were like mountains, and even though there were mountains of swords and seas of fire ahead, the soldiers still rushed forward desperately. The outcome can be imagined. Under the enemy's intensive artillery fire, the French army failed to charge and suffered heavy casualties. In order to cover up his command errors, Brollard captured three innocent soldiers as scapegoats and sentenced them to death for desertion and other crimes. For the benefit of the soldiers, Captain Dax fought hard, but in the process he gradually saw the ugliness of officers and war... The film was adapted from Humphrey Cobb's 1935 novel "Paths of Glory" and won the 1959 Italian National Association of Film Critics Silver Ribbon Award for Best Foreign Language Film Director and the 1958 Finnish Film Academy Award for Best Director. .
