Synopsis of The 39 Steps

Gunshots were heard in the concert hall, and the audience panicked. A foreign woman (Lucy Manaheim) asks Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) if she can spend the night at his home. Before being killed the next day, the woman told Richard that he must stop the spy organization "The Thirty-Nine Steps" from smuggling state secrets out of the UK. In order to prove that he was not the murderer, Hannay had no choice but to go to the Scottish Highlands to search for clues. On the train, he sought the help of a young blond woman named Pamela (Madeline Carroll), but she immediately reported it to the police. Got him. He found Professor Jordan, the leader of the "Thirty-nine Steps", but was immediately framed and imprisoned. After narrowly escaping, he was taken away by two people disguised as plainclothes policemen because of Pamela's report, and they handcuffed Pamela and him together. So the two escaped hand in hand and gained mutual trust. Then they returned to the concert hall again, and Hannay saw the performance he had seen last time. He asked "Mr. Memory" (Wright Watson) who claims to be able to answer any question: "What are the thirty-nine steps?" So... Hitchcock once said that "Mr. Memory" is one of his favorite characters.
