Transit

Synopsis of Transit

German troops were just outside Paris. Georg fled to Marseille at the last moment. His luggage carries the legacy of a writer named Weidel, who committed suicide out of fear of being persecuted. Among the legacies are a manuscript, letters and a guarantee for a visa from the Mexican embassy. Only these can prove they have been allowed to leave the port city, which also requires an entry permit from a potential host country. Assuming the identity of Weidel, Georg attempts to gain access to some of the scarce passages on the ship. Talks between refugees took place in the corridors of his small hotel, in the waiting rooms of the consulate, and in cafes and bars by the port. Georg helps take care of the son of his late comrade Heinz, who died while fleeing. But his plans change when he meets the mysterious girl Mary. Transit is based on Anna Seghers’ eponymous novel of the World War II which she wrote. The film is set in modern Marseille, where people from the past appear everywhere. Thus, refugees from past meet refugees from today, history meets the present, and all their stories combine to create one eternal transit space.
