Synopsis of Lust for Life
Before determined to become a painter, Van Gogh (Kirk Douglas) was a promising painter in a gallery. After several emotional failures, he began to try to become a painter. Van Gogh's compassionate character allowed him to live in harmony with the poor miners and paint their miserable lives. His paintings are passionate and emotional, but they are not appreciated by the mainstream art world. Van Gogh invited Gauguin (Anthony Quinn), the rising Impressionist painter at the time, to paint in the south of France. For many years, his brother Theo had supported Van Gogh financially and even financed Gauguin's trip to the South. At first, the two enjoyed themselves happily and created many high-level works together. However, due to their incompatible personalities, they gradually quarreled fiercely. Gauguin tried to leave, but Van Gogh was mentally disturbed and tried to threaten Gauguin with a knife. Gauguin fled in panic, and Van Gogh eventually cut off his own ear. Lonely and impoverished, Van Gogh was tortured by mental illness and entered the hospital several times for recuperation. But he never stopped painting and kept waiting for the public's appreciation.
