Synopsis of Ghost Stories

This film is divided into four stories: "Black Hair" A samurai living in Kyoto (played by Mikuni Rentaro) is tired of the poor life. He abandons his wife (played by Shinju Michiyo) and marries an aristocratic lady (played by Misako Watanabe). However, the coldness of his current wife made the samurai miss the gentleness and virtuousness of his ex-wife. He met his ex-wife again, and the result was unexpected; "Snow Girl" On a snowy day, a young man (played by Nakadai Tatsuya) met the beautiful snow girl (played by Keiko Kishi) on the mountain. . The snow girl loves the young man and spares his life, but the young man is not allowed to tell outsiders about this encounter; in "The Story of Earless Hoichi", the blind monk Hoichi (played by Nakamura Kazuo) even appreciates the pipa playing and singing, but he often comes into contact with ghosts. The elders of the temple decided to save Yōichi because his life was bound to be ruined; in "Teacup" the samurai Kannai (played by Nakamura Saemon) found a stranger's face in the tea bowl when he was drinking tea. He broke the tea bowl, but attracted an uninvited guest. The film was adapted from the short story of the same name by Koizumi Yakumo and won the 1965 Cannes Film Festival Special Jury Award and the 1966 Mainichi Film Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.
