Rosewater

Synopsis of Rosewater

The protagonist of the film is based on Maziar Bahari, an Iranian-Canadian journalist. In 2009, Bahari served as a correspondent for Newsweek in Iran, covering the Iranian presidential election that year. On June 13, after the election commission declared Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the winner, supporters of his rival took to the streets. Bahari photographed the protest, which became known as the "Iranian Green Revolution" . He was taken from his home in Tehran on June 21 and released after 118 days in prison. Bahari later wrote his experience as a memoir, "Then They Came for Me," which was published in 2011. In the book, he describes being tortured and interrogated by people who believed he was a spy who had infiltrated Iran. Because his eyes were blindfolded and he couldn't see clearly the interrogator's face and could only smell the rose water on his body, Bahari called him "Rosewater" in the book, which is where the film's title comes from. .
