Synopsis of Obit

In the United States, approximately 2.59 million people die every year, but only 1,000 of them will be featured in an obituary report in the New York Times after their death. These obituaries are not death notices like ceremonial official documents, but life stories written by professional obituary writers. In their limited space, they tell us why this deceased person deserves everyone's attention and how he influenced the world during his lifetime. As one of the few media outlets with full-time obituary writers, the subjects of the New York Times' obituary pages can be either well-known figures such as David Bowie or unknown heroes who rowed alone across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. No matter who the subject is, obituary writers in the newsroom work hard to collect information about these people, contact their family and friends, make sure all the information is correct, and race against deadlines every night. In the 95-minute film "Obituary," director Vanessa Gould's lens does not go beyond the scope of the "New York Times" editorial department, nor does it intend to delve into the various issues of the industry (Will digital journalism threaten its survival? What will happen in the future? Where to go?), but focuses on the daily life of obituary writers and what they have to face...
